The vaping controversy involving Riyan Parag has brought a huge discussion in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026. Rajasthan Royals captain was seen vaping in a live broadcast while playing against Punjab Kings and attracted a lot of criticism from fans and experts. Board of Control of Cricket in India acted swiftly and imposed a 25% fine of match fee to the 24 year-old. However, it divided the opinions and a lot of fans were expecting a tougher sanction on the player. Vaping is already banned under Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019 but IPL playing conditions do not clearly state any ban on the same. Ashwin's Reaction on Parag Controversy Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin discussed about the topic on his YouTube show. Ashwin who was also playing with the young captain for Rajasthan Royals explained that young captain should have been more aware of the surroundings. Ravichandran Ashwin stated: "I have my deepest empathy and sympathy for the young kid, but at the same time, I totally believe all these things should and can be avoided." Former India spinner added: "It can't be easy, man. In today's world, I also sometimes read things and think, man, I mean, sometimes these things happens. I'm not saying that these things can be let go under the carpet, because unless you take action no one will learn it. But it can be avoided." Ashwin also added that these things happen sometimes but still player needs to be responsible for their act especially if they are leading a team. Over the past two seasons, he has scored almost 1000 runs and has been picked in the Indian team on account of his form in 2024. Previously too, he has stood in for the captain and was appointed the full time captain post changes in the team leadership. Post the aforementioned transition and promotion, his performance with the bat in the IPL 2026 season has dipped though his captaincy has been widely appreciated. The latest incident would have further put additional pressure on the young captain to perform, where some may opine the punishment was sufficient and others that the league must take steps to formulate clearer policies.
