Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja bowled several no-balls on the first day of the last Test between India and New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday, November 1. The repeated lapses did not go well with the great Sunil Gavaskar, very particular as he is when it comes to the basic execution of the sport. One of the most oft-repeated adages in cricket goes that the spinners don't even need to throw no-balls in the first place because they are only running lesser distances at lower speed as compared to a fast bowler. Practically though, almost playing a competition with each other, Sundar and Jadeja almost matched up at the overstepping rates. Sundar has bowled three no-balls while the Jadeja bowled five no-balls in the innings. Fast bowler Akash Deep stepped over the line once too as India bowled a total of nine no-balls in the first innings. With a fast bowler, it is understandable, that the momentum of the body can sometimes take your foot over the line. But spinners? Players keep saying that there are things that are not under our control. Well, this is one thing under control, so might as well, be cautious," But as the no-balls began to pile up, Ravi Shastri humorously claimed that Gavaskar had tossed his lunch plate against the wall in frustration. "Sunil Gavaskar was having lunch. He smashed the plate on the wall. Thank god he's not fielding in the slip. Washington would have been close to Washington DC," India bowled out New Zealand by 235 as Jadeja and Sundar picked up five and four wickets, respectively. By Lunch Break on Day 2, India had reached 195/5 and were trailing by a mere 40 runs. Rishabh Pant fell for 60, while Shubman Gill has 70* and Jadeja 10* left at the crease to continue the game for the home side.
