Veteran India coach Ravi Shastri has recently made a comment to the effect that he would have made Virat Kohli the captain of the Indian Test team immediately following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25. Kohli then proceeded to retire from Test cricket in May 2025, just after Rohit Sharma also parted ways with the format. Here is what Ravi Shastri said "I feel sad that he has gone, the way he has gone. Sadly, I think it [retirement] could have been handled better, there should have been more communication. If I had anything to do with it, I would have made him the captain straight away after Australia,” This triggered wild rumors about who would lead the Indian Test team in the future. India will now host England in a five-match Test series beginning June 20 at Headingley, with Shubman Gill likely to handle the captaincy responsibilities. Shastri, regarded as one of the most powerful Indian cricket coaches, enjoyed an excellent rapport with Kohli. Under them, India qualified for the semifinal of the 2019 ICC World Cup and won back-to-back Test series in Australia, first in 2018–19 and then in 2020–21, breaking records. Kohli made his debut in Test cricket in 2011 against West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, and emerged as the backbone of Indian batting soon. His greatest moment was in 2019 when he had his career-best score of 254 not out against South Africa in Pune in a Test match. However, his second half of his Test career wasn't as remarkable as his early days. Over the last five years, Kohli witnessed his form slipping badly, managing 30.72 with only three centuries and nine half-centuries. He played 123 Tests in total, falling short of becoming only the second man to score 10,000 runs in the format by just 770 runs. Having already retired from T20Is last year, Kohli has now sole shifted his attention towards playing for India in the 50-over format.
