Before the foot fracture, Rishabh Pant was dealing with a finger injury he sustained during the third Test at Lord's. For that, he could not keep wickets, and Dhruv Jurel picked up the role. The eight days between the third and the fourth days had a lot of iffs and buts regarding Rishabh's availability in the fourth Test at Manchester. But he showed up. Before the fouth Test, Ravi Shastri, who happened to be India's former head coach, had a chat with Rishabh Pant. He asked the wicketkeeper if he was fine or not, and, if he had broken his bones or not. What Rishabh answered was a reflection of his grit—even if he had his bones broken, he would have still played. In a video recently shared by BCCI, Ravi Shastri recalled his little chat with Rishabh. Shastri said, "Before the Test I asked him "how is the finger? Tuta toh nahi hai?" He said, 'of course, I will play this game. Tuta bhi hota toh bhi khelta." Pant was literally seen limping down the stairs, taking baby steps while taking singles. Appreciating Rishabh Pant's character, Shastri said, "For him to come back and do what he did was something special. Sometimes motivation goes to another level. What he did today for the team if that does not lift the team, nothing will. Ovation he got while going back and coming out and appreciation from England players—that's what you play for and that's what makes heroes." Rishabh Pant retired hurt after the ball from Chris Woakes hit his right foot while he was batting at 36. But he came on Day 2, and scored a much-needed half century.
