Ravi Shastri has voiced strong support for Washington Sundar, calling him a “genuine” Test allrounder and backing him ahead of Nitish Reddy in the red-ball setup. Speaking on The ICC Review, the former India coach praised the 25-year-old’s versatility and effectiveness, particularly in home conditions. Shastri stated, “I always loved Washington. When I saw him on day one, I said he’s the man. And he can be a genuine all-rounder for many, many years for India.” Washington made his Test debut in 2021 at the Gabba during the coaching tenure of Ravi Shastri, and played a crucial role in India’s famous win. But despite his potential, he has featured in only 11 Tests since. His most notable recent performance came in the 2024 home series against New Zealand, where he was the joint highest wicket-taker with 16 wickets in four innings. Shahstri added, “He again is just 25 years of age. I think he should have played a lot more Test cricket. Can be lethal in India on tracks where the ball is turning, as New Zealand found out... He out-bowled some of the senior spinners. He bowled that well and he can bat.” Read also: Mohammed Siraj Opens Up on Heartbreaking Dismissal and Comeback Batting promise and overseas edge tilt balance in his favour Shastri, who coached India during Washington's debut, further stressed the Tamil Nadu cricketer's batting abilities. He suggested a potential shift up the order, noting, “He’s a naturally talented batsman. He’s no number 8. He can go at 6 very soon in the batting lineup.” The off-spinning allrounder has continued to prove his mettle in the ongoing England series. At Lord’s, he picked up 4/22 in the second innings, including key wickets of Joe Root and Ben Stokes. Shastri believes Sundar’s skillset extends beyond Indian pitches. “And once he gains confidence, I think he’ll get better and better because even overseas he’s got the drift, he’s got the pace, he’s got the strength in his fingers and the fitness. You know, do both long spells and do the controlling job when needed.”
