Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan created history as the highest wicket-taker in T20 internationals with his side's 38-run victory against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Sharjah on Monday, September 1. Rashid surpassed New Zealand's former pacer Tim Southee's record of 164 wickets and now has 165 wickets to his name in only 98 innings. The Afghan captain began the tri-series requiring four wickets to achieve the top ranking. He took one wicket against Pakistan in the first match and then secured a match-winning three-wicket haul against UAE. Ish Sodhi (150) and Mustafizur Rahman (142) are now the nearest active players on the list, but Rashid is way ahead of them. Afghanistan batted first and scored 188/4 with contributions from Sediqullah Atal (54) and Ibrahim Zadran (63). The duo added 86 runs for the second wicket, while Azmatullah Omarzai and Karim Janat cameos of 20 and 23 runs contributed to the score. UAE began their pursuit in good fashion, thanks to captain Muhammad Waseem who blasted 67 off 37 deliveries, including six sixes. Rahul Chopra was unbeaten on 52 without being dismissed, but the middle and lower order succumbed to spin pressure created by Rashid Khan and Sharafuddin Ashraf, who claimed 3/21 and 3/24 respectively. UAE finished on 150/8, recording their second defeat of the tri-series. Both sides wore black armbands and took a minute's silence to mark the victims of a catastrophic earthquake in Afghanistan, which claimed more than 800 lives. The victory gave Afghanistan their first point in the series. Pakistan leads the tri-series with wins over both UAE and Afghanistan. The teams will face each other again on Tuesday, with the tournament being a build-up for the Asia Cup on September 9 in the UAE.
