Rajasthan Royals have announced that Rahul Dravid won't continue as their head coach for IPL 2026. Dravid, who previously captained and coached the squad, remained with the Royals for less than twelve months in the second stint. His return as head coach was formally declared on September 6, 2024. The move puts an end to Dravid's lengthy and special association with the Royals, which began over a decade ago and witnessed him serving the team in various capacities throughout the years. Dravid initially played for the Royals in 2011 after playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore. He was made captain of the team and played under him till 2013, receiving respect from everyone for his composed captaincy and the way he kept a young team, which was constantly referred to as underdogs. Later in 2014 and 2015, Dravid served as a mentor for the franchise after retiring. A Second Stint That Ended Early Having been India's head coach and led the national team to a T20 World Cup win in 2024, Dravid returned to the Royals in 2025, becoming the head coach. His return was characterized as a "full-circle moment" due to his past experience with the team. The season was not as expected, however, with Rajasthan Royals ending on the ninth spot on the table, winning just four of their 14 games. A Royals statement read: “Rahul has been central to the Royals' journey over many years. His leadership has influenced a generation of players, built strong values within the squad, and left an indelible mark on the culture of the franchise.” The release also indicated that the franchise proposed a new position to Dravid after conducting a "structural review," but he declined. He was injured in a match of club cricket and coached much of the 2025 season of the IPL in a wheelchair. Following Dravid's departure, the Royals are currently on the lookout for a head coach. They might think about hiring back Kumar Sangakkara, who was promoted to Director of Cricket when Dravid became the head coach. Interestingly enough, Dravid is the second IPL coach to quit a franchise before the 2026 mega auction. A month ago, Kolkata Knight Riders also parted ways with Chandrakant Pandit, who played a crucial role in KKR's IPL 2024 title win. This completes another chapter in Rahul Dravid's illustrious cricketing career, and as he departs, his legacy of leadership with coolness and strong values lives on at the Rajasthan Royals.
