Muhammad Waseem has stepped down as captain of the UAE men's ODI team after 26 matches in charge from 2023 to 2024. Rahul Chopra, a wicket-keeper batter, has been selected to be the new ODI captain for the upcoming series of ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 against Oman and Netherlands, which are scheduled to start in early November. Waseem, the 30-year-old top-order batter, took over the ODI captaincy from CP Rizwan during the 2019-23 CWC League 2; he represented UAE in their opening match against Nepal in March 2023. During his stint as captain, UAE won seven matches while losing 19. He has also scored three half-centuries. His average fell to 21.10 in the 19 losses, leaving his career average at 25.44. UAE is competing in 2024-27 CWC League 2 and rests at the bottom of the eight-team table with one win in their seven matches, with the last loss, and Waseem's final as captain against Namibia by eight wickets after UAE could muster only 190 runs. Even though he resigned as the ODI captain of the UAE, Waseem is still a part of the UAE side in T20Is. He was one of the reasons behind their good performance in the recently concluded tri-series victory by them in Namibia. The UAE team stayed at the top of the points table after three victories and one defeat with the USA at the third spot. Waseem topped the tournament's batting chart with 159 runs in four innings.
