Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin came in support of Jamie Overton's run-out attempt at the non-striker's end during a Big Bash League (BBL) match on New Year's Eve. The game was between Perth Scorchers and Adelaide Strikers at the Adelaide Oval. During the Scorchers' pursuit in the 8th over, Overton observed that Finn Allen was leaving early. He broke the stumps at the non-striker's end but didn't appeal for an LBW, rather gave Allen a warning. Ashwin complimented Overton, who was awake to the movement. Ashwin has many times advocated for such dismissals as it is recognized in cricket laws now as "Run Out." Ashwin received much flak when he run out Jos Buttler in IPL in 2019 for almost similar reasons. Ashwin didn't apologize or even explain this one as fair and in good rules. Finn Allen scored a cracking 23-ball fifty. His partner, Cooper Connolly scored 48 and Captain Ashton Turner ended up hammering away quickly for the team with a good 35 in just 18 balls. The Scorchers were chasing a total of 143 and had beaten the game in 14.3 overs. Their bowlers Jhye Richardson, Jason Behrendorff, and Lance Morris earlier had been successful in fetching seven wickets for the bowlers, limiting the Strikers to 142 runs. That result pushed the Scorchers into second place on the points table, while Sydney Sixers is still at the top. Strikers are down to 7th place and have won just one of the five games they played.
