New Zealand allrounder Doug Bracewell has retired from all forms of cricket at the age of 35. The decision ends a career that spanned more than a decade at international and domestic levels. Bracewell last played for New Zealand in 2023. His retirement was confirmed through a statement released by Central Districts. A long-standing rib injury, which ruled him out for the current domestic season, played a key role in the call. Bracewell represented New Zealand across formats between 2011 and 2023. He featured in 28 Tests, 21 ODIs and 20 T20Is. His most defining performance came early. In December 2011 at Hobart, playing just his third Test, he claimed match figures of 9 for 60. That performance sealed New Zealand’s first Test win in Australia in 26 years. It remains the team’s last Test victory there. In Test cricket, Bracewell took 74 wickets at an average of 38.82. In limited-overs internationals, he collected 46 wickets combined. He also contributed with the bat across formats, often batting in the lower middle order. Reacting to the decision, Bracewell said: "It's been a proud part of my life, and something I aspired to as a young cricketer. I will always be grateful for the opportunities I have had through cricket, and the chance to play for my country, as well as for Central Districts, throughout my domestic career. It's a privilege to play first-class and international cricket, and I'm grateful to have played and enjoyed the game for as long as I have." His father Brendon and uncle John played Test cricket. John later served multiple terms as New Zealand head coach. Uncles Douglas and Mark also played first-class cricket. Bracewell shared the international field with cousin Michael, appearing together in two ODIs and one Test. They also represented New Zealand at the 2010 Under-19 World Cup. At domestic level, Bracewell was a long-time Central Districts player. Beyond New Zealand, he featured in the IPL for Delhi Daredevils in 2012. He also played for Joburg Super Kings in the SA20 in 2024 and appeared in the Global Super League earlier this year. In first-class cricket, Bracewell finishes with rare numbers. Across 137 matches, he scored 4,505 runs at an average of 25.45, including three centuries. With the ball, he took 437 wickets at 31.08. He is one of only two players in New Zealand first-class history to cross 4,000 runs and 400 wickets, alongside Jeetan Patel. His retirement closes a chapter defined by durability, family lineage, and clear statistical weight.
