The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce the Test squad for the England tour tomorrow. The selection of the captain is going to be much talked about. Needless to say, the BCCI will announce the 18-member squad, which means 17 other players should be selected. Certain expected names might miss out despite being in the running. Sarfaraz Khan & Karun Nair over Shreyas Iyer: Yashasvi Jaiswal is the set opener. The real question is: who partners him? KL Rahul opened in Australia, but there are other options. Shubman Gill is a likely candidate to perhaps take back that role. Sai Sudharsan too is an option. Abhimanyu Easwaran is unlikely to make the cut as four openers are likely to be picked. One of Gill, Rahul, or Sudharsan will open. The other two will likely occupy three and four positions. Five feels the most open at the moment with three names in contention for it—Karun Nair, Sarfaraz Khan, and Shreyas Iyer. None were part of the Australia series, although Sarfaraz was in the squad and plays with India A alongside Nair. Rumors have it that Iyer may not make it. He was good in the Ranji trophy but did not outperform Nair or Sarfaraz. Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja are expected to hold the number six and seven positions. Backing up Pant will be Jurel Dhruv as the second wicketkeeper. Ishan Kishan's entry through India A is nevertheless Jurel ahead of the competition. Washington Sundar is probably going to be the second spin all-rounder, just as he was in the Australia series. The dry conditions in England make his inclusion ever-important. No place for Shami: Five fast bowlers and one spinner are expected to be picked by the Indian side. With Shardul Thakur and Mukesh Kumar likely to be armed with the pace attack, five pacers would be enough. A name that would probably be missing would be Mohammed Shami. Reports support that, and, in fact, he has shown the lack of rhythm to validate the claim. Such rhythm-oriented bowling delivers if it gets into that groove. Presently, neither has Shami been able to find that groove due to poor form or injured state. It is indeed very telling Clayton has been excluded from India A. Jasprit Bumrah will lead the pace attack with Mohammed Siraj following closely behind, his swing bowling suited perfectly for English conditions. Prasidh Krishna could be the best of the rest. He impressed in Australia and has shone for the Gujarat Titans this season. Akash Deep and Harshit Rana complete the pace squad, though they may be left on the side. On England's dry pitches, spinners do have their role. While Jadeja will surely open, Kuldeep may well be selected as well. He poses a more attacking spin threat than either Jadeja or Sundar and may well be eyed as Ashwin's long-term substitute.
