A clash occurred outside the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Sunday just a day ahead of the first Test between Bangladesh and South Africa. The scuffle occurred between two sections of fans – for Shakib Al Hasan and against him. A section called "Shakibians" shouted for the return of Shakib into the Test side but was chased away even in the presence of security forces by the opposing group. The South African team was training in the stadium at the time. No injury was reported, but according to local newspaper Prothom Alo, security forces detained one person. Traditionally, there have been two main protest groups- pro-Shakib and anti-Shakib. Shakib's supporters believe the Tests should be given to him as a farewell series while the anti-Shakib faction is politically opposed. Shakib was an organiser of the Awami League party which was deposed democratically in the month of August. By Thursday, Shakib confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that he would not travel for the match. The BCB later excluded him from the team, citing a sports adviser, Asif Bhuiyan, said Shakib had been advised not to come to Bangladesh due to safety concerns. Shakib's fans began protesting outside the stadium on Friday, demanding his return to the team. They continued their protests on Sunday, though security forces had erected barricades.
