Prasidh Krishna odds-on favorite for India’s Test squad to England, Harshit Rana most probably joining him. But in terms of test selection, Krishna fits the bill better than Rana. The Karnataka pacer has been in excellent form, strong enough to already make a case for himself in the five-match series starting in June. Let's start with Rana. His performance at the impressive IPL 2024 campaign, when he will be playing for KKR, resulted in his promotion to the Indian Test team. Yet, in his two appearances so far in International Test matches, both of which were part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, he has had just 4 wickets to show from 45 overs of toil. So far, he has 50.75 as his average with his best of 3/48. Across those two matches, he gave away 203 runs and bowled 6 maidens. However, Krishna brings in a little bit of experience, having played his first Test match in 2023. He has played only 3 Test matches, one more than Rana, but he took 8 wickets. This is where he makes a real impact. He took two of his wickets during the series against South Africa. Almost a year later, and after warming the bench for a long time, he had an opportunity in the 5th Test against Australia at Sydney. Krishna made it count: 6 wickets for 107 runs in 27 overs, averaging 17.83, with a best of 3/42. That Test performance alone was enough to suggest that he could have a far bigger impact than Rana. The extra height also gives him an advantage, particularly in England conditions. Krishna's tally is formidable in first-class cricket, with 88 wickets in 24 matches at an average of 21.57. Meanwhile, Rana has got 47 wickets from 12 matches at an average of 22.45. That would mean Krishna has played more red-ball cricket and, furthermore, has had greater exposure to overseas pitches-all the more reason for him to be favored to back Bumrah and Shami. After the tour of Australia, Krishna came back to red-ball cricket for the Ranji Trophy, taking 7 wickets in 2 matches for Karnataka. He has led the Purple Cap race in IPL 2025 with 16 wickets in 8 games. Rana has picked up 11 wickets in as many matches. He has probably done well in white-ball formats, but his red-ball career remains elusive and that is why Krishna stands in favor of Rana for India’s playing XI for the England series.
