Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers has opined on the dramatic moments that ensued after India's win in the Asia Cup 2025. In a video on his weekly #360 show on YouTube, de Villiers called for a very distinct demarcation between sports and politics following the embarrassing trophy presentation night. ABD on Trophy Presentation Controversy Trophy ceremony following India's victory was marred by political tension. India did not accept the trophy from the President of Asia Cricket Council (ACC), which resulted in a disorganized and awkward finale. Referring to the incident, de Villiers stated: "Team India sort of weren’t happy with who was handing out the trophy. I don’t feel that belongs in sports. Politics should stay aside. Sport is one thing, and it should be celebrated for what it is. Quite sad to see that, but hopefully they sort things out in the future. It does put the sport, the players, the sportsmen, the cricketers in a very tough position, and that’s what I hate to see. It was quite awkward there at the end." His comments served to underscore the increasing tension that had been evident during the tournament. From no handshakes to on-field altercations and then, lastly, the medal and trophy standoff, the Asia Cup stories tended to focus away from the sport of cricket. ABD clarified that the political debates must not bring players into unwanted trouble or dominate their display. He complimented the team on being consistent and performing well under pressure in crucial situations. de Villiers added: "Let us focus on what’s most important (the cricket itself). India are looking really, really strong. Building up to that T20 World Cup. Remember, it’s not too far away. And they look like they’ve got a lot of talent, and they play the big moments well. So fantastic." ABD’s perspective offered both a reality check and optimism. He criticised the distraction caused by off-field politics but at the same time admired India’s preparation ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026.
