In a surprise turn of events, Papua New Guinea (PNG) cricketer Kiplin Doriga has been charged with robbery in Jersey. The 29-year-old wicketkeeper-batter was arrested following an incident that occurred on Monday (August 25) in St Helier, the capital of Jersey. Doriga, present in Jersey with the PNG cricket team for the ICC CWC Challenge League, was arrested by local police and brought before the Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. The accused, during the hearing, pleaded guilty to the offense. The case is now transferred to the Royal Court, as the Magistrate decided that the case was too serious to be dealt with by them. The next hearing will take place on November 28. Doriga has been refused bail until then and will be held in custody. As reported by EMTV, one of Papua New Guinea's top media houses, the nation's cricket board has confirmed the incident but decided not to comment any further. He has played for his nation in 97 T20 internationals and was in their T20 World Cups in 2021 and 2024. In total in these tournaments, he played seven international games. In 39 ODIs, Doriga has scored 730 runs at an average of 20.27, while in 43 T20Is, the wicket-keeper batter has amassed 359 runs. Following the current Challenge League competition, PNG will face the 2025 ICC Men's T20 World Cup Asia Regional Final. The side will require a top-three qualification in that event to be eligible for the 2026 T20 World Cup. This mishap has come as a huge disappointment for Doriga, his side, and PNG cricket in preparations for important international matches.
