One of India's best Test cricket batters, Cheteshwar Pujara, recently announced his retirement from cricket in all formats, bringing curtains to a career of more than one and a half decades. Interestingly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote a moving letter to the 37-year-old, lauding his contribution to Indian cricket and, above all, to the longer version of the game. Pujara debuted in 2010 and played for India in 103 Tests, amassing 7,195 runs at 43.60, with 19 hundreds and 35 fifties. His best came away from home, especially in Australia, where his efforts saw India record history's first-ever back-to-back Test series victories, including that unforgettable 2018–19 victory when he was adjudged Player of the Series. Also, he even continued Rahul Dravid's record at the No. 3 slot. Following his retirement announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote a personal letter to Pujara, which the cricketer later shared on his social media. One of India's greatest Test batsmen, he totalled 7,195 runs at 43.60, predominantly at No. 3, replacing Rahul Dravid's position. He hit 19 centuries and 35 half-centuries, including hundreds against all the Test-playing countries except Afghanistan, whom he encountered just once. Against Australia and England, he had five centuries in each, and four against Sri Lanka. Pujara's Test debut was against Australia in Bengaluru in November 2010, and he was a member of a number of record series victories over them — particularly the 2018-19 and 2020-21 successes in Australia and India's home series victory in 2023. He was Player of the Series for the 2018-19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with 521 runs in four Tests, to help India register their first-ever Test series victory in Australia. At the national level, he made his debut for Saurashtra in December 2005 and played for them up to the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season. He also played for Sussex in the County Championship.
