The prime minister of India, Narendra Modi, wrote a letter to the veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin following his retirement from international cricket. Durning the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy, Ashwin has announced his retirement from all formats in international cricket after the draw was declared on Day 5 of the third Test at Gabba. Following that, wishes overpoured on him, with fans waiting in numbers outside his home in Chennai. However, this time the PM himself sends an emotional thank-you letter to Ashwin. According to the news agency IANS, PM Modi penned down a letter to Ashwin praising his tenure in international cricket and claimed the national team will miss jersey number 99. The letter says, “The announcement of your retirement from international cricket surprised fans in India and across the world. At a time when everyone was looking forward to many more off-breaks, you bowled a carrom ball that bowled everyone. However, everyone understands that this must have been a hard decision for you as well, especially after the outstanding career you have had playing for India. Tagging each of Ashwin's 765 international wickets as special, Modi emphasized his record number of Player of the Series awards in Test matches. From his debut with a five-wicket haul to playing crucial roles in India’s 2011 World Cup win and 2013 Champions Trophy victory, Ashwin has been integral to the team's success. Modi also recalled Ashwin’s memorable batting moment in the 2022 T20 World Cup against Pakistan, where his presence of mind helped India win with a well-timed leave and shot. He wrote, "Often people are remembered for some wonderful shot that they played. But you have the unique distinction of being remembered for both a shot and a leave in the legendary match of the WT20 in 2022. Your winning shot elicited great cheers. The way you left the ball before it, allowing it on its way to becoming a wide ball, showed your presence of mind." Not only that, PM Modi further brought reference to Ashwin's YouTube channel and 'Kutti Stories,' appreciating his wit and warmth. He concluded his letter by congratulating Ashwin’s family for their support and sacrifices throughout his career, wishing him more time with them in the future.
