The fall of India in Test cricket on home soil has sent shockwaves among the fans across the world. A team once unbeatable on spinning tracks is struggling badly, and the latest loss to South Africa at Eden Gardens shows how far things have slipped. Of the eight home Tests played under the head coach Gautam Gambhir, India have won only four. All four wins came against weaker teams-bangladesh-2 and West Indies-2-which raises all the more questions about the current form of India. Indian Batting Failure Raises Big Concerns If the Kolkata pitch was roundly condemned, India's batting was no less disappointing. Instead of showing patience and fight, many players simply threw away their wickets. And the current World Test Champions, South Africa, just made full use of India's mistakes and dominated this match since the beginning. Fans were expecting Gambhir to bring in strong strategies and discipline, especially after his successful IPL stint with Kolkata Knight Riders. But the results have been far from perfect. India were clean swept 3–0 at home by New Zealand earlier in the year. Later, they lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy away, a series they had dominated for a decade. One of the biggest problems in India is the clarity of team roles. Every other player in the Test team is an all-rounder who doesn't know what his role is. The number three batting position that was once the pride of Rahul Dravid, and later Cheteshwar Pujara, has become a revolving door with no stability whatsoever. A chance to salvage this series at home by winning the Guwahati Test, too, now seems almost a distant reality. If they lose this home series to South Africa, it will make their chances of reaching the WTC final as good as over. Fans on social media have openly criticized Gambhir for poor decision-making, confusing selection calls and strategies that have not worked in the longest format. India's journey to the WTC final now depends on major changes. Unless the team fixes its batting issues and brings stability and quality to its lineup, the dream of listing the WTC title may remain far away.
