The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been the greatest stage for T20 cricket in history. Players from all over the globe have aspired to perform in the IPL because it tests one's talent and skill coupled with temperament under investigation. Many Indian and overseas players have shined here; however, some who did exceedingly well in other T20 leagues have had difficulty replicating that success in this one. Franchises select foreign players based on their accomplishment in other T20 leagues: Big Bash League (BBL), Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Pakistan Super League (PSL), and T20 Blast. But success in IPL does not bring home the bacon, even for the best of the lot. Here are a few good examples of players who performed globally but did not succeed in the IPL. Players Who Shined in Other T20 Leagues But Failed in IPL Aaron Finch Image Source: BCCI Aaron Finch has become almost synonymous with swashbuckling white-ball batsmanship globally, having played more than 300 T20 matches and scoring 9,718 runs with an average of 34.58. However, it is unfortunate that Finch could not produce any semblance of consistency in the IPL. Playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, and Sunrisers Hyderabad, Finch has taken part in 92 matches with an average of 25.19 and a strike rate of 128.2. Recently, though the world has seen him a lot, IPL franchises have left him unsold. What an unpredictable game we have in India's top league. But what would surprise anyone is that his record in IPL is poor. Colin Munro played for Kolkata Knight Riders 2016 and for Delhi Capitals in 2018 to 2019, being able to tally an average of just 14.75 run outputs per innings at a strike rate of 125.53 in 13 games without ever scoring over 40. Munro, despite being successful around the world, could not find a place in any of the IPL teams. Rilee Rossouw Image Source: Associated Press Like many left-handers from South Africa, Rilee Rossouw has had an incredible T20 career, amassing over 9000 runs with an average of 29.67 in 388 T20 matches worldwide, including the international cricket, BBL, CPL, IPL, MSL and T20 Blast. Still, in the IPL, with the Royal Challengers, he did miserably in his first two years of IPL in 2014-2015: Just 53 runs, 10.60 while beginning his innings and a strike rate of 103.92. He was later picked up by DC and PBKS in IPL 2023 and 2024 where he delivered an average performance. The best performing overseas players have found it challenging to adapt to Indian pitches and the pressure of the IPL. Daniel Christian Image Source: BCCI Australian all-rounder Daniel Christian has participated in 412 T20 matches and made 5,848 runs and 281 wickets worldwide. He is known for being one of the most valuable players in experience and title-winning ability. He has represented several IPL franchises starting from 2011; however, he averaged only 14.83 in his IPL matches with that average coming from 49 matches, with 38 wickets taken. Even with a reputation for delivering under pressure all around the world, he found it too hard to reproduce his success in India. But with such impressive stats, he has not performed well in IPL. He represented Delhi in 2011 and 2019, and his average was only 17.08 in 15 matches with a strike rate of 113.89 and a highest score of 47. It just shows how tough IPL conditions can be, even for established performers. Sam Billings Image Source: BCCI Another name in the list is the English wicket-keeper batter Sam Billings. Billings was roped in by Delhi in IPL 2016, considering his explosive batting ability in international circuit. However, the player failed to make his mark in the toughest T20 league. In his IPL career, Billings has been a part of 30 matches, playing for DC, CSK and KKR, and has scored just 503 runs at an average of 19.34. On the other hand, he has scored over 1500 runs in BBL, over 3,000 runs in T20 Blast, and has done well in other leagues such as ILT20 and PSL.
