India batter KL Rahul has made it clear that his focus is firmly on earning a spot for the upcoming T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka next year. The Karnataka star, who scored 539 runs this IPL season but could not lead Delhi Capitals to the playoffs, spoke openly about the challenges he faces in securing his place in the national T20 squad. Rahul reflected on how his career has progressed, saying that he has never been the kind of player to negotiate roles with selectors or captains. “If you have seen how my career has gone, I don’t think I really had a choice or I have never been a player to speak with the selectors and sit with the captain and tell the captain that this is what I want to do. I just want to be in the team and whatever challenge is thrown at me, I have found that’s better for me to adapt to rather than me trying to sit and think about what I need to do,” he said in an interview with Sky Sports as quoted by the Indian Express. He added that clarity on his role from team management helps him prepare better. "When the role is given to me and the coaches and the captain and the selectors tell me that look this is what we are expecting for you, maybe No.5, maybe No.6, open the batting. Yeah, that sort of gives me clarity, and then I work around my game.” Also READ: Gill’s trial by fire begins in England, warns Pujara: “Won’t be easy for a young captain” "People who make the decisions seem to forget what the player has done" The 31-year-old also candidly discussed the frustration of having to prove himself repeatedly. “I don’t mind proving myself all the time. That’s how any sport is – to always perform in every tournament. That’s the case with international cricketers anywhere in the world. But that’s not the hard part – it’s the people who make the decisions who seem to forget what the player has done in the recent tournament. It has been the challenge for me.” Also READ: Sikandar Raza travels from England Test to PSL final in 24 hours, hits winning runs Despite these challenges, Rahul remains optimistic and focused on performing well in the lead-up to the World Cup. “Yes, I want to get back in the T20 team and the World Cup is in my mind, but for now it’s just trying to enjoy how I’m playing right now,” he said.
