The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) finds itself mired in controversy after the Auditor General of Pakistan uncovered several financial anomalies. The audit points to gross irregularities, including unauthorized appointments, excessive spending, and procedural violations, totaling millions of Pakistani rupees. The findings, revealed in a comprehensive report, highlight payments of PKR 63.39 million to police for meals during international matches and PKR 5.4 million in salaries to under-16 coaches at the High Performance Centre in Karachi, appointed without proper approval. The audit also noted non-transparent ticketing contract awards and PKR 3.8 million in overpaid match officials' fees. Adding to the scrutiny is the irregular appointment of a PCB Director of Media with a salary of PKR 900,000 per month. The report also questions multiple payments made without competitive bidding or legal clearance. The report alleges unauthorized payments of PKR 4.17 million to Naqvi between February and June 2024, covering utility charges, fuel (POL), and accommodation—benefits already covered by his ministerial post. The audit lists several other expenditures lacking approval: PKR 19.8 million on diesel for bulletproof vehicles, PKR 22.5 million on coasters’ rental, and a PKR 198 million loss in media rights due to undervalued agreements. Broadcasting rights were reportedly granted without competitive procedures. Naqvi’s tenure has been turbulent, marked by multiple leadership changes and Pakistan’s early exit from the home Champions Trophy in 2025. The cricket board’s handling of media and commercial deals has drawn ire from within and outside the cricketing community. As of now, Mike Hesson is coaching the national team, with Salman Ali Agha leading the T20 side. The team is in Karachi for a preparatory camp ahead of their Bangladesh tour, which begins on July 20 with a three-match T20I series.
