In the latest development, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi has announced that Mohammad Rizwan will be Pakistan’s new white-ball captain, with Salman Ali Agha as the vice-captain. PCB took this decision as their regular white-ball captain Babar Azam left the captaincy of his national side due to the team’s poor performance in recent times. The news came shortly after the squads for the upcoming tours of Australia and Zimbabwe were revealed. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi while addressing the reporters in a press conference also mentioned that he would extend his support to the newly appointed captain and he wants to strengthen Pakistan’s domestic cricket as well. We need to back our young talent, and we also need to strengthen our domestic cricket structure.” He also further clarified that Babar didn’t let go of his captaincy because of any pressure from the board but he wanted to focus on his game. After initially stepping down following the 2023 ODI World Cup, Babar Azam's resignation marked his second departure from captaincy. Though he was reinstated to lead Pakistan’s white-ball squads a few months later, team performance issues persisted. Pakistan faced yet another setback with a group-stage exit in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Subsequently, the board appointed Shaheen Afridi as the new white-ball captain. However, after a disappointing series loss against New Zealand and overall subpar performances from both the team and Afridi, he was swiftly removed from the role. Pakistan is gearing up for an exciting white-ball series in Australia, set to feature three ODIs and three T20I matches, starting from November 4. Mohammad Rizwan, as the newly appointed captain, will be taking charge for the first time, leading the Pakistan team on this tour.
