In the latest developments, reports are emerging that the most successful franchise of the Hundred league is set to be renamed to MI London from the next season. The Oval Invincibles team have won two titles each in men’s and women’s divisions of the league. According to a report in the Telegraph, Indian co-owners are interested in changing the name of the franchise for the sixth edition. Oval Invincibles, who are co-owned by the Mumbai Indians’ owners, have a 49% stake in the franchise. They are interested in bringing the ‘MI’ brand value to the tournament. According to the Telegraph report: “The name of the franchise from next year has been a contentious issue from the start and is not yet confirmed in writing. However, Telegraph Sport understands that it will be called MI London despite the wishes of Surrey, who initially wanted the county name incorporated into a rebranded Oval Invincibles." The report further added: “From a brand perspective, I hope we can brand it as a Surrey-branded team and part of our cricket ecosystem.” Apart from Oval Invincibles, the MI Owners also own franchises in different T20 leagues around the world. The list includes the Mumbai Indians (men’s and women’s teams in the IPL; WPL, respectively), MI New York in Major League Cricket (MLC), MI Cape Town in SA20 and MI Emirates in International League T20 (ILT20). Along with Oval Invincibles, Manchester Originals will also get their new name for the new edition. They are likely to change to Manchester Super Giants from the sixth season, and Northern Superchargers will have ‘Sunrisers’ in their name.
