India was left with a heavy defeat at the hands of Australia in the Boxing Day Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Indians could not save the match from an outright draw as they failed in the fourth innings, losing by 184 runs. With the series now being at 1-2, India have to win the last Test in Sydney to keep hopes alive for a WTC final in 2025. A victory for Australia would confirm their place in the WTC final, where they will face South Africa in June 2025. The Indian batting has been under severe scrutiny of late. Some have been comparing the batting approach of this team with one that actually emerged victorious under the leadership of Kapil Dev, while others such as Basit Ali, a retired cricketer, suggest that Virat Kohli should bat at No. 5 instead of being sent down the order to No. 4, where he has been struggling of late. Basit Ali was quoted by Hindustan Times saying: “Now is the time to bring Nitish up at No. 4 and Virat Kohli at No. 5 because he is not able to score at No. 4. He's getting out on the same shot, if you are not able to score then drop lower down the order; Rohit is doing that but nobody thinking about Virat because everybody's afraid, I think former coach Rahul Dravid will be missed." Since his century in the Perth Test, he has been getting out to the deliveries outside the off stump multiple times in this series. Kohli has so far scored 167 runs at an average of 27.63 which does not go well with his usual standards; he would like to look up to the coming match. In contrast, Reddy has been playing quite well. In his debut series, he scored 294 runs at an average of 49.00 to become the third-highest run-getter in the series. He would like to continue his good form in the final Test to be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
