Sunrisers Hyderabad’s IPL 2025 season has fallen apart due to weak bowling and tougher pitches, according to pacer Jaydev Unadkat. Following SRH’s 38-run loss to Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, Unadkat admitted that the bowlers have not performed as a group and that has hurt the team’s chances of winning games. “From my experience of playing in the IPL for all these years, for a team to do well, there has to be at least 3 or 4 guys, in terms of your bowling I’m talking, who have to contribute in every game. Probably this year, I would say that we are lacking that,” Unadkat said after the match. He added that bowling, like batting, needs partnerships. If only one or two bowlers are doing well and the rest are off the mark, it puts too much pressure on the team. “Like we look at partnerships in terms of batting, I think it’s the same in bowling as well because when you’re not bowling well from both the ends, it creates unnecessary pressure on the other guy. Then the plans also change, so somehow that hasn’t really clicked for us and yes, I mean we have to take the blame for not being the best bowling side in the tournament.” Big names like Pat Cummins and Mohammed Shami have struggled to find rhythm this season. None of SRH’s main bowlers have kept their economy rate under 8, making it hard to defend any total. “When you want to win games, do well for your team, you got to be the best, and we haven’t been the best. I can’t say that there is anything that we lack in terms of practising and training and planning.” Also READ: Virat Kohli on being annoyed by RCB teammate Swastik Chikara 'Pitches not the same this year' Unadkat also explained that SRH’s attacking approach from IPL 2024 is harder to repeat because of the pitch conditions and improved planning by opponents. “Last year, we scored 200+ in four or five matches, and that gave us a sense that we had set a standard. But that can’t always be the norm. Other teams and batters are planning better now, and bowlers are also adapting and coming up with new strategies.” He pointed out that flat tracks in 2024 suited SRH’s batters. But this year, the surfaces have been more challenging and demand smarter bowling. “Last year, swing was enough to make an impact, but this year, it’s about using variations effectively. Also, the pitches are playing a big role. Last year we had a lot of flat pitches, whereas this time we’ve had more difficult ones. That’s why we haven’t been able to carry the same momentum.” Unadkat concluded by saying the bowlers still need to step up, no matter how well the batters perform. “I also feel that the average scores in the last few matches have gone up overall. Last year we had a particularly strong batting unit, which led to those high scores. But in the end, winning games is more important than scoring big totals. Even if we score 200, it’s the bowling side’s responsibility to defend it. That’s what truly matters.” SRH will next play Delhi Capitals on Monday, May 5, in what could be a do-or-die clash.
