The Rajasthan Royals captain, Sanju Samson, has revealed a funny side of Shimron Hetmyer and candidly said that he is definitely not retaining him. Samson, who himself is on the verge of being traded, attended the Kutti Stories show with former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. There, he shared how Hetmyer used to attend team meetings with soggy eyes. Discussing the Guyanese, Samson said that he literally wakes up at 5 pm if the match is about to start at 8 pm. He will attend the team meetings with half-opened eyes and will ultimately hit the crucial runs for the team. Samson said, "But this guy, the match is at 8 PM, he will wake up at 5 PM, and be all sleepy during team meetings and all. Then he will score the most important runs for the team and win them the game. So, there is a way to do like that also." Notably, Shimron Hetmyer was a part of Delhi Capitals before coming to Rajasthan Royals. Since 2022, he has scored 965 runs. 2022 was his best year, scoring 314 runs, the year when Rajasthan Royals reached the final under Samson's captaincy but lost to Gujarat Titans. In the 2025 IPL, Shimron Hetmyer was retained by the franchise for INR 11 crores. However, he suffered a lot of backlash along with Dhruv Jurel (INR 14 crore) for not scoring consistently down the order. The retention irked the fans more as it came at the cost of releasing their ace British opener, Jos Buttler, who joined Gujarat Titans. Speaking about captaincy traits, Sanju Samson said that he has evolved a lot in terms of player management. He said, "Captaincy has opened up my perspective and helped me to accept these kind of ways. There is no one way of succeeding in cricket. I don't believe that there is only one way. When people are trying different things, I like to back them instead of questioning them."
