The iconic Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar sounded disheartened after not being invited to hand over the Border Gavaskar Trophy to the Australian captain Pat Cummins. The India vs Australia Test series, named in honor of cricket legends Sunil Gavaskar and Allan Border, was claimed by Australia following a tough 5-match Test series. It was Allan Border who took the stage and handed the trophy to Cummins and his team. Speaking on that, Gavaskar expressed his frustration, saying that he was not invited despite having his name in the series. To Code Sport, he said, “I certainly would have loved to have been there for the presentation. After all, it is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and it is about Australia and India. I mean, I am here on the ground. To me, it should not matter that Australia won when it comes to the presentation. They played better cricket so they won. That’s fine. Just because I am an Indian (I did not present the trophy). I would have been happy to present the trophy with my good friend Allan Border." The Border Gavaskar Trophy organizers, however had earlier told him that if Australia wins, Gavaskar is not needed. Gavaskar expressed his confusion over the decision, considering the series was named after both him and Allan Border. He concluded, "I was told just before the Test started that was going to be the situation. If India didn't win or draw the series I wouldn't be required...I'm not feeling sad, but I'm just feeling a little perplexed. It's the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, both of us should have been there."
