The Indian selectors have questioned if Mohammed Shami should be included in the squad for the impending Test series against England. Shami has not found his rhythm recently after a return to international cricket, and though his time in IPL 2025 was disappointing, a greater concern for selectors may be related to his repeated fitness issues moving forward in to a long tour. As reported by the Times of India, according to a BCCI insider, who spoke anonymously to provide insight, Shami is not a guaranteed a spot for the 5-Test series. The players' last Test appearance was during the World Test Championship's final, which was played in 2023. However, the source had provided some insight to Shami's status and/or fitness. According to the source, He is not in rhythm and he is struggling to get through his run-up properly. The Source commented: “As of now, Shami isn’t an automatic pick. It’s been months since he has come back to international cricket but he has barely been in rhythm. While IPL performances are usually not considered while picking India teams, Shami is struggling to finish his run-up and the ball is not carrying to the keeper like it used to before his Achilles tendon injury. He invariably goes back to the dressing room after a short spell for recovery,” The idea was to rotate Jasprit Bumrah and Shami throughout the Test series. However, given that Bumrah may play two or three matches at best, the selectors are now concentrating on working out what exactly is troubling Shami. In IPL 2025, Shami has conceded 337 runs off 180 balls at an economy rate of 11.23 because he has had extreme difficulty with line and length. Back in March, it was written that selectors are keeping a careful watch on Shami's form, and they are not basing their plans for the England series around him.
