Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has addressed India’s sudden withdrawal from the World Championship of Legends (WCL) clash against Pakistan. Speaking to reporters in England, Afridi stressed that cricket should be free from political interference. Afridi said, "We are here to play cricket and I’ve always said that cricket should be kept away from politics; it should move forward. A player should be a good ambassador, not a source of embarrassment for their country." The Pakistan Champions side, led by Afridi, includes veterans like Younis Khan, Wahab Riaz, Sohail Tanvir, and Kamran Akmal. India and Pakistan were originally set to face off on July 20. However, in the wake of public outcry following the Pahalgam terror attack, the organisers called off the much-anticipated fixture. Especially having their practice held, it sounded baseless to him to pull out suddently. Afridi stated, “If India didn’t want to play against Pakistan, they should’ve refused before coming here. But now you’ve arrived, even held practice sessions and then suddenly changed everything in a single day.” Tournament organisers have apologised to the Indian legends for the distress caused. Meanwhile, Pakistan Champions’ owner Kamil Khan confirmed the event would continue as scheduled. Khan said "All the remaining matches are taking place. The tournament is proceeding as scheduled, with no changes.” He also clarified that if Pakistan reaches the semifinals or final, further decisions on matchups will be taken then. Khan added, “As for this match, the two points will be awarded to us and we deserve those points as per the rules." Shikhar Dhawan, part of the Indian side, posted his stance on X, confirming he would not take part in the match.
