England's Joe Root is busy creating records in Test cricket. During the recent Lord's Test against Sri Lanka, he surpassed Sir Alastair Cook to become England's top century-maker in Tests Root scored two centuries in that match, as his aggregate reached 34; he thus joined other cricket greats, namely Younis Khan, Sunil Gavaskar, Jacques Kallis, Mahela Jayawardena, and Brian Lara This 34th century now has taken Root's total runs to 12,377, just 96 runs away from breaking into the top five of the all-time run-scorers list and also surpassing Sir Alastair Cook as the leading run-scorer for England in Test history. Sachin Tendulkar happens to possess the highest record in Test cricket. And considering the form he is in, there were questions whether Root can break the record. Former England captain Michael Vaughan feels a case of when, not if, the burden being that injury or some freakish occurrence gets in the way. He also firmly believes that if that does happen, BCCI will leave no stone unturned to ensure that an Indian player has the record. When asked (on Club Prairie Fire podcast that) if Root will 'hunt down' Tendulkar's Test record, Vaughan said: "Yes, I think it's three and a half thousand runs he trails by. He has at least three years. Unless his back snaps; he is the most enthusiastic lover of the game. I don't think he is going to get away. He is no longer the captain and knows his game better than ever before. I'll be amazed if he doesn't. He has played beautifully." He further added: "Even if he goes on, I still think he will carry on. If Joe goes past Sachin, it will be the best thing that ever happens to cricket, because there's no way BCCI would want an England player at the top of the list. They'll want an Indian at the top so that will secure Test match cricket because it'll take forever for someone to get past him." Also Read | Surprising Cricket Facts You Didn’t Know!
