No leadership role will be bestowed on Bumrah during the upcoming India-England five-Test series, commencing on June 20. This series will open India's campaign in the World Test Championship cycle. Bumrah has already been vice-captain of India and has even undertaken the role of captain for the entire Australian tour, but now the selectors have decided to deny him that responsibility. For the management, a source revealed that they prefer a captain and vice-captain who are expected to be playing for all five matches, which means Bumrah will not be able to do for the whole series. The Source commented: “We want a player who will be available for all five Test matches, and he should be given the vice-captain’s role. Bumrah won’t be playing all five matches, so we don’t want to appoint different deputies for different games. It will be better that the captain and vice-captain be certain and play all five Tests.” Bumrah made a comeback in IPL 2025 after a nearly three-month layoff, which came to a halt after suffering a back injury sustained in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This player was the most used fast bowler in India last year. He was given a rotation in the England series just to save him from overwork. The report has also detailed that the selectors want to nurture a youngster for the vice-captaincy slot, eventually letting him take up the mantle of the full-time captaincy. Given their ages and the experience they might carry, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant would definitely be strong candidates; while Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, and KL Rahul are considered too senior; whereas Yashasvi Jaiswal's maturity has still a ways to go before assuming leadership responsibilities.
