The Indian Premier League (IPL) won't be accessible on free stream any longer as the policy of subscription plan will be implemented from the next season of IPL. Free streaming of IPL matches was introduced from 2023 onwards as JioCinema acquired digital rights for the competition for a five-year span. However, reports indicate that the matches will now be streamed on JioHotstar, a new platform which has been set up with a tie-up between Viacom18 and Star India. The fans will have to pay a subscription price for viewing the matches. JioCinema, apart from the IPL, also has rights to the Indian Super League and the Winter Olympics. Disney's Hotstar, meanwhile, has the rights for ICC events in India and the English Premier League. The new platform is also likely to launch plans from Rs 149. The new app should be coming out soon with a basic plan at Rs 149 and an ad-free plan at Rs 499 for three months. A source told Reuters that: “Once a user develops affinity to the platform, starts watching for free, and becomes loyal… the subscription will kick in then.” This approach isn’t entirely new, as similar strategies have been seen in the past across various sectors."
