The recently appointed captain for the Punjab Kings, Shreyas Iyer, has finally opened up on the reason for partying with his previous team, the Kolkata Knight Riders. Iyer led KKR to their third IPL title in 2024; however, he has neither been retained nor bought by KKR in the auction. Regarding that, Iyer highlighted ignorance from KKR management. Iyer said that there was a lack of communication from the management's behalf. Speaking to Indian Express, Iyer said, “Certainly, I had a fantastic time winning the championship at KKR. The fan following was outstanding; they were electrifying in the stadium, and I loved every moment I spent there. So obviously, we had a conversation (about retention) straight after the IPL championship. But for a few months, there was a layover and no concrete effort in having a retention talk. I was perplexed about what was happening. So, because of a lack of communication, we came to a situation where we parted ways mutually. And that’s the long and short of it." Iyer further informed that the management reached out a weak prior to the retention days, and that made Iyer decide to part ways with KKR. Addressing the matter on his YouTube channel, Chopra highlighted KKR’s history of nurturing core players like Andre Russell and Sunil Narine. He confirmed discussions occurred between KKR and Iyer, contradicting the latter's claim of no communication. Chopra suggested unresolved differences led to the parting of ways. He also hinted at Iyer’s apprehensions regarding the auction process and cryptically remarked, “Karma is real.” Chopra said, “I am not going to spell it out. Shreyas had some apprehensions about how it goes in the auction, ‘if I end up somewhere, then what will happen’. It is interesting what has happened. Sometimes you start thinking, ‘Karma is real yaar’, you never know. I can confirm the discussions did take place. However, Shreyas says there were no discussions. There is some discrepancy. I can confirm there were talks. I, too, have my sources." With Iyer now captain of Punjab Kings, he faces the challenge of leading one of IPL’s least successful franchises to its maiden title after a stellar 2024 season. Notably, the Punjab Kings subsequently signed him for a record ₹26.75 crore.
