Former Indian captain and chief selector Kris Srikkanth has vehemently attacked India's Asia Cup 2025 squad, saying the side cannot win the T20 World Cup if the same individuals are picked for the tournament. The former selector questioned multiple things about the team combination, vice-captaincy decisions, and player selections, saying some of the selections were made based on previous form and not recent performances. On his YouTube channel, Srikkanth said: "We might win the Asia Cup with this team, but there is no chance of winning the T20 World Cup with this bunch. Are you going to take this team to the World Cup? Is this the preparation for the T20 World Cup, which is hardly six months away?" Questions Over Gill's Role and Player Selections A major talking point has been the return of Shubman Gill as vice-captain, replacing Axar Patel, who was India’s deputy during the England bilateral series in January. Gill last played a T20I in July 2024 and has now been named as Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy for the Asia Cup. Srikkanth expressed disappointment at Axar’s removal, calling it a step backward. I don’t know how Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube, and Harshit Rana have come in. IPL is considered the main criterion for selection, but the selectors seem to have considered performances before that." Srikkanth noted that Rinku Singh achieved only 206 runs in IPL 2025, and Shivam Dube's 357 runs and Harshit Rana's selection over Purple Cap winner Prasidh Krishna were eyebrow-raising. He also raised questions about the batting order and said that Yashasvi Jaiswal should have been selected. Former Indian cricketer said: "Who will bat at No. 5? Five has to be either Sanju Samson, Jitesh Sharma or Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh. Hardik Pandya usually bats at No. 5, so now, Axar cannot bat at six. I can’t understand how they picked Dube. Yashasvi Jaiswal has performed in international cricket and the IPL as well. What does he do?" India are grouped in Group A with Pakistan, UAE, and Oman. They will start their Asia Cup journey against UAE on September 10 and take on Pakistan on September 14.
