Indian cricket selectors are reportedly considering including left-handed batter Devdutt Padikkal and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy for the upcoming two-Test series against the West Indies, according to ESPNcricinfo. The home series, scheduled to begin on October 2, could provide fresh options for India’s top and middle order. Padikkal, who has represented India in two Tests, most recently in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Perth, is in strong form. The Karnataka batter posted a 150 for India ‘A’ against Australia ‘A’ in the first four-day game at Lucknow, bolstering his credentials for the number three spot. India’s search for a reliable top-order batter has intensified after inconsistent performances from R Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair during the England tour. Nitish Reddy, hailing from Andhra Pradesh, toured England earlier this year but struggled to make an impact before a knee injury curtailed his opportunities. He is currently in the India ‘A’ squad for the second game against Australia ‘A’, alongside Padikkal, signaling a potential recall to the senior side. Jurel impressed with 140 runs in the first rain-affected India ‘A’ game against Australia ‘A’ and had previously performed well during the 2024 home series versus England. While Pant remains India’s first-choice wicketkeeper, the Uttar Pradesh star can cement his role as a reliable deputy. With Jurel temporarily promoted, Tamil Nadu’s N Jagadeesan, who traveled to England following Pant’s injury, could serve as backup for the series. The West Indies Tests mark India’s second assignment in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle and the first home series since New Zealand’s 3-0 sweep last year.
