Cricket Australia has announced Cooper Connolly as a substitute for injured Matthew Short. Short had suffered from a hamstring injury during their match against Afghanistan. The 21-year-old Connolly, who earned his maiden ODI cap in England last year, was originally selected as a traveling reserve for the tournament. On Monday, the ICC's Event Technical Committee granted approval for his inclusion in Australia's squad. Connolly has represented Australia in six international matches so far, including three ODIs. A left-handed batter, he also contributes with left-arm spin. Earlier, Australian captain Steven Smith hinted that opener Matthew Short might miss the Champions Trophy semifinal due to a quad injury sustained during the rain-affected match against Afghanistan. Short struggled while running between the wickets and managed only 20 off 15 balls before his dismissal. Smith admitted that the quick turnaround between games makes his recovery unlikely. Jake Fraser-McGurk, who replaced Mitchell Marsh, could open the innings, while all-rounder Aaron Hardie was another possibility if the team opts for a batting reshuffle instead of a direct swap. However, getting Connoly as the replacement will sort out all confusions. Short’s absence would also mean losing a useful spin option, as he was economical against Afghanistan, conceding just 21 runs in seven overs. However, part-time spinners Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne remain available. Australia has already battled multiple injury concerns, with Mitchell Marsh, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc all dealing with fitness issues. Additionally, Marcus Stoinis recently announced his retirement. Meanwhile, with India defeating New Zealand on March 2, Australia is set to face India in the first semifinal on March 4 in Dubai.
