Rohit Sharma, the Indian ODI captain, is likely to be rested in the match against New Zealand as he is combating a hamstring pull he succumbed to while fielding against Pakistan. As per reports, Rohit Sharma did not attend the batting session on Wednesday but had a few hours of fielding drills. The Indian skipper refrained from taking throwdowns and instead engaged in an extended strategic discussion with head coach Gautam Gambhir. The only reassuring sign came from a brief sprint Rohit took, suggesting that while the injury may not be severe enough to impact India's Champions Trophy campaign, it could still warrant his rest for the upcoming clash against New Zealand. Shubman Gill too missed the net session totally, as he was reportedly suffering from a bout of illness. However, further reports suggested that Shubman, if he recovers, might lead India against the Kiwis. Notably, both India and New Zealand have qualified for the semifinal and will play the customary final group stage match on March 2. However, these fears were put to rest when it was revealed that Gill utilized the team’s scheduled break on Thursday, February 27, for a private net session. As per a Times of India report, India had taken a day off following their win against Pakistan. Despite this, Gill chose to fine-tune his skills with an informal session, accompanied by throwdown specialists and support staff. Though not an extensive practice, the session highlighted his dedication. The report from TOI said, "Shubman Gill trained with members of the support staff for an informal session. Since it wasn't an official training day, it looks like a personal session. But it wasn't a marathon one and took place in the afternoon hours." The world’s No.1 ODI batter has been in sensational form in the Champions Trophy 2025. He started with a century against Bangladesh and followed it up with a solid 46 off 52 against Pakistan, reinforcing his importance to India’s campaign.
