Former captain of the Canada national cricket team, Navneet Dhaliwal, has announced that he will be retiring from international cricket after his team’s last match in the T20 World Cup, which will be played against the Afghanistan national cricket team in Chennai on Thursday. The 37-year-old batter made the announcement after his team lost to the New Zealand national cricket team, thus ruling out any chances of moving into the Super Eight stage. Dhaliwal said: "I took the decision before I came here [for the World Cup]. I've been playing for more than 12 [11] years now. So it was planned, and this is going to be my last match." Navneet Dhaliwal is on the verge of retirement as the highest run-getter for the Canada national cricket team in T20 Internationals. Since his debut in international cricket in 2015, he has led Canada in 29 T20 Internationals and four One-Day Internationals (ODIs). During his stint as a captain, he led Canada to 21 victories, all in T20 Internationals. Some of the major accomplishments of his career include his success as a captain and his remarkable performance of 61 off 44 balls in Canada’s first-ever T20 World Cup match, which still stands as one of his most memorable performances. He also said: "Yeah, the best memory was when we first qualified for the [2024 T20] World Cup. After that, I scored in the opening game of the World Cup last time. Also, when I became a captain, that was a proud moment for me. So yeah, those few [memorable] moments." After finishing his playing career on Thursday, Navneet Dhaliwal has plans to move on to coaching at the grassroot level with the aim of developing young players and giving back to the Canada national cricket team. My priority would be the youngsters. That's something that would give me happiness. It's hard to leave cricket right away, and once cricket is in your blood, it's very hard to stop playing. So, my next goal is to help the youngsters to take the next step." One of the brightest young stars in the Canadian national cricket team, Yuvraj Samra, has already made headlines around the world with his incredible 58-ball century against the New Zealand national cricket team. At the tender age of 19 years and 141 days, he became the youngest player ever to score a hundred in a men’s World Cup match, whether it is T20 or ODI. Moreover, Samra is the first player from an Associate nation to score a century in the men’s T20 World Cup, which is a historic moment for him as well as Canadian cricket. He later said: "You see what Yuvraj Samra did. Scoring a hundred against New Zealand, which is one of the best sides in the world. And he is someone who was born in Canada, where it's not easy to learn cricket. I think we still have a background in India. We played cricket here. We have that basic foundation of cricket and skills. But he lacked that. But the way he played, you can see how cricket is growing now. So, [I'm] very happy." According to Navneet Dhaliwal, tournaments such as the Global T20 Canada and the Canada 60 leagues have been essential for the development of local players, who have been given the chance to play alongside international superstars. "If you come straight to this big podium, and you haven't met any of these big stars, you get lost. So in that scenario, it helps a lot."
