Australia's off-spinner Nathan Lyon has made it clear that he’s eager to keep representing the team in Test cricket as he makes his comeback from a hamstring injury. The 38-year-old faced a tough setback with a significant hamstring tear while fielding during Australia’s series-clinching third Test win in the Ashes against England at the Adelaide Oval back in December 2025. Since then, he hasn’t played any cricket and is now racing against the clock to be fit for Australia’s first Test series after the Ashes a two-match showdown against Bangladesh in August, set to take place in Darwin and Mackay. According to cricket.com.au, Lyon is hitting the gym at least five days a week, has cycled around 700km as part of his recovery, and is nearly back to running at full intensity. He’s also gearing up to start bowling on turf wickets in the next few weeks. "It's been quite a long process from the Adelaide Test. We're probably two-thirds through it now. it's a pretty traumatic injury. We've got markers through this process, physical markers, that we check along the way. So far he's hit all of them," said Cricket Australia physical performance coach Ross Herridge, as reported by the aforementioned source. However, Australia’s Chief Selector George Bailey remains cautious about Lyon’s ability to participate in every Test match, given the severity of the injury and the fact that age isn’t exactly on Lyon’s side. In response, Lyon has doubled down on his commitment to play in every Test as Australia embarks on a busy 12-month stretch where they could play up to 21 Tests, kicking off in August. Nathan Lyon is laser-focused on making his comeback to international cricket and lending a hand to Australia as they gear up for a packed Test schedule. Even with worries about his injury and age, this seasoned spinner has demonstrated incredible commitment throughout his recovery. After months of hard work, Lyon is eager to showcase his fitness and keep playing a vital role for Australia in the longest format of the game.
