Bangladesh Cricket Board has confirmed that Najmul Hossain Shanto has sought to resign as the Bangladesh captain in all formats. Shanto is the Bangladesh Test, ODI, and T20I skipper. According to ESPNcricinfo, Shanto had communicated his decision to the senior officials of the board after Bangladesh suffered a seven-wicket defeat at the hands of South Africa in the first Test in Dhaka. He has asked for this home Test series against South Africa to be his last as the captain. The BCB hasn't responded to Shanto's resignation letter yet because the board president, Faruque Ahmed, is abroad and will return to Dhaka on Monday evening. In case the BCB accepts Shanto's resignation, they will have to look for a replacement sooner than later because Bangladesh is going to face a very demanding schedule in coming weeks. The second Test against South Africa begins on October 29 and will continue until November 2. Bangladesh then proceeds to the UAE for three matches of ODI's against Afghanistan starting from November 6. That series will conclude by November 11, following which Bangladesh will travel to West Indies for an all-format tour. It will begin on a tour match on November 15. His batting average has slid to 25.76 from what was his good form that made him one of the regulars for the team. He was then handed leadership in ODIs and T20Is as the BCB wished to have him steer the team through a transition period since some senior players had retired or were approaching retirement. Despite the battle he has been facing against the bat, Shanto has had some success in his stint as captain of Bangladesh, including leading them to a Test victory over New Zealand last year and winning a series against Pakistan in August.
