Washington Sundar was instrumental in ensuring India did not lose against England in the fourth Test match at Manchester's Old Trafford. The spin-bowling all-rounder rose to the challenge on Day 5, hitting his first Test century and taking India to safety. Along with Ravindra Jadeja, Sundar added 203 runs for the fifth wicket as India drew the game to keep the series hanging in balance. Sundar scored unbeaten 101 off 206 deliveries and his innings comprised of nine fours and a six, displaying patience and prowess under pressure. He chipped in with the ball as well, picking two crucial wickets during England's innings. His all-around contribution helped India set up a series-decider at The Oval in London, beginning July 31. "Fans Tend to Forget His Performances," Says Sundar's Father Despite of all that his son did, M. Sundar, Washington Sundar's father, complained about how the all-rounder has been dealt with by the selectors. Addressing the Times of India, he asserted that performances from Washington go unnoticed and he is taken out of the playing XI after one or two bad games. Also Read | What is Drift in Cricket? Sundar’s Secret Weapon Against ENG Explained Sundar's father said: “Washington has been doing very well consistently. However, people tend to avoid and forget his performances. Other players get regular chances, only my son doesn't get them. Washington should consistently bat at number five like he did in the second innings of the fourth Test and get five to ten straight chances. My son was surprisingly not picked for the first Test against England. The selectors should watch his performances.” M. Sundar opined that his son is worthy of more regular chances and needs to keep batting at five, where he demonstrated his resilience to pressure. He was critical of Washington being left out of the opening Test of the series, given his past record of providing useful runs, such as in the 2021 series against England on spin-friendly pitches. He also mentioned that Washington has stepped up on several occasions but is still unable to find a permanent place in the team. M. Sundar further added: "My son gets dropped even if he fails in just one or two matches. It is not fair. Washington scored an unbeaten 85 on a rank turner in Chennai against England back in 2021 and 96* against the same opposition in Ahmedabad during the same year. He would have been dropped even if those two knocks had ended up in centuries. Has this kind of an approach been maintained for any other Indian cricketer? He has become very strong after all this and the result is the performance which people are witnessing now." Washington Sundar and his colleagues will now shift their attention to the fifth and last Test at The Oval. With the series hanging in the balance, the 24-year-old will look to follow up his Manchester heroics and assist India in leveling the series.
