The English team was 43-4 once but it was Harry Brook who had different plans to revive the innings. Brook not only hammered his second consecutive century in this series but also played a crucial 123-run knock with a strike rate of over 100 to lead his team to a score of 280, the wicketkeeper-batter Ollie Pope complimented him well and scored a handy 66-run to form a crucial match-saving partnership of 174 runs for the 5th wicket. After the end of the first day’s gameplay, Brook labelled this knock as the best knock of his career so far. The kind of situation he was in and the pressure he played, this is his favourite hundred of his career currently. As quoted by ESPNcricinfo, Brook said: “I think that might be my favourite hundred so far. I enjoyed that a lot. It was just the circumstances really, it was 26 for 3 when I came in and the pitch was doing quite a bit. It was seaming and swinging and I'm just glad I put my attacking mode on and really took it to them and put them under pressure.” Brook further mentioned that the triple century he scored during the Pakistan Test series was scored on a flat surface, the pitch was dull. This century was the second consecutive century for this young batter after scoring 171 runs in the first match against New Zealand. “Obviously that pitch (Multan) was extremely flat. You could just lean on it and the outfield was so rapid it would go for four. Here in the situation of the game, the pitch, and the way I played...I felt like I was really putting them under a lot of pressure. It's a pretty special feeling. Most of the balls came out of the middle of the bat. It feels good to be batting like that.” Talking about the match, England are in a top position currently in the second match. After posting 280 in their first innings, they also dismissed half of the Kiwis batters while bowling. New Zealand were currently at 86-5 on day 1.
