Right after India won the final of the T20 World Cup, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20Is saying that the match against South Africa was his last T20I game for India. This news came just after Virat Kohli also said that he had played his final T20I match. On JioCinema, Rohit said: "Retirement has become a joke these days in world of cricket these days. People announce retirement but then return to play. It hasn’t happened in India, it’s rare here. However, I have been observing players from other countries – they announce retirement but then make a U-turn. So you never really know whether someone has actually retired." When asked to Rohit, he said: "My decision is final and I am very clear. It was a perfect time to say goodbye to the format which I really loved playing. I played 50-over cricket for India and then directly I played T20 World Cup in 2007. I won then and then this one too (2024 T20 World Cup). Good time to move on." Rohit had the satisfaction of winning a World Cup as captain, while Kohli added a T20 World Cup to his bucket list, having the 2011 ODI World Cup already tagged to his name. Rohit, who is 37 years of age, is fairly sure of this decision and is not going to reconsider his return to T20Is, unlike many cricketers who, after announcing their retirement, have done a complete about-turn on playing T20Is - Rohit doesn't look likely to be doing the same. Rohit has played 159 T20I matches from 2007 to 2024 scoring 4231 runs at a strike rate of 140.89, with five centuries and 32 half-centuries. His played his first match in the 2007 World Cup where India won by defeating Pakistan in the final. Rohit Sharma will continue to play in Test and ODIs for India.
