MS Dhoni's return as captain of the Chennai Super Kings started on a bad note with the team losing heavily by 8 wickets. Majorly, wrong decisions in bowling and batting strategies hurt CSK badly, bringing sharp condemnation from fans and experts alike. It was the second time in this IPL season that Dhoni came to bat at number 9. Though CSK rectified the mistake against RCB by sending him up the order, they committed the same error against KKR. Odd viewing when Dhoni came into bat only after the team had lost seven wickets. With none of the top-order batsmen coming up with runs, sending him in after Ashwin and Hooda turned out to be redundant and an expensive affair. Another strange decision was sending Ashwin ahead of Jadeja in the batting order. Although Ashwin had home conditions in his favor, he was more in the mold of Jadeja as an undisputed better batter. Ashwin managed to just get 1 run off 7 balls before he was out. CSK now also called back an out-of-form Tripathi because of Ruturaj Gaikwad's injury. Having had three atrocious outings and spending time on the bench, Tripathi was back into XI at number 3 against KKR. He could only make a meager run of 16 off the 22 balls before he was dismayed by Narine. Instead, CSK could have gone for the dynamic Vansh Bedi. KKR's spin-friendly conditions demanded the more intelligent bowling strategy. Since spinners were dominating, Dhoni could have started with Noor Ahmad and Ashwin. In every respect, Noor, the top wicket-taker in the team this season, was the obvious choice. But Dhoni started with Khaleel Ahmed and Anshul Kamboj, bringing in Ashwin only during the 5th over. Over six overs in the powerplay, there was only one spinner's over. Noor picked a wicket in his first over but bowled just two overs in the match.
