Ruturaj Gaikwad, the full-time captain of Chennai Super Kings, is likely to be benched for a match due to his injury. With that, the former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni reportedly will get the leadership role back for the match against Delhi Capitals. According to a report from Express Sports, Ruturaj will be missing Saturday's match against Delhi at Chepauk due to an injury. And if Rutu fails to recover within time, MS will be looked at the ultimate go-to option for the captaincy. In the pre-match press conference, CSK's batting coach, Michael Hussey, sounded optimistic on Rutu's development. Yet he said, "Yeah, we're hoping he [Gaikwad] is going to try and have a bat today for training. And, yeah, it [elbow] is still a little bit sore, but it's improving every day. So, we're very hopeful that he'll be fine for tomorrow." He added, "I don't think we've actually thought about that [captaincy] too much. Well, I haven't thought about it too much. I'm sure Stephen Fleming [CSK head coach] and Rutu have thought about that. But we've got some young guy coming through. He's behind the stumps. Maybe he can do a good job. I'm not sure. He's got a bit of experience in the role, so maybe he could do it. But I'm not exactly sure, to be honest." The incident occurred in the second over of their 183-run chase. He got injured while facing a short-pitched delivery from Tushar Deshpande. He attempted a pick-up pull but missed the ball entirely, which rose sharply and struck him hard on the right forearm, close to the elbow. The impact seemed severe, with Gaikwad visibly in pain. It appeared to hit near the bone, making the blow even more uncomfortable. MS Dhoni had been the face of CSK's leadership since the franchise's debut in 2008, except for the two seasons when the team was suspended and a brief stint in 2022 when Ravindra Jadeja was handed the captaincy—a move that didn’t pan out as expected. Dhoni returned to lead the side and captained them in the 2023 IPL final, guiding CSK to their fifth title. However, with the arrival of a new season, Ruturaj Gaikwad was named captain. Under his leadership in 2024, CSK ended the league stage in fifth place, narrowly missing out on the playoffs due to net run-rate.
