Suresh Raina has once again spoken out about his former franchise, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and their decision-making process. The former Indian cricketer recently revealed some surprising truths about the team’s auction strategy and MS Dhoni’s role in it. While many fans and analysts believe that Dhoni has the final say in CSK’s auction picks, Raina has dispelled this popular myth, shedding light on the actual structure behind the franchise’s player selections. “They always say MS Dhoni makes the final call. But to be very honest, he never attended any of the auctions. He was never a part of those discussions. He always talked about the players who were retained. MS might get a call about whether to go ahead with a player or not - but he's not that involved,” Raina said during his conversation on Star Sports. He slammed the cricketers for a lack of effort compared to Dhoni. He pointed out how Dhoni, despite being 43 years old, continues to give his all for the team, performing duties such as wicketkeeping and captaining, while other highly-paid players fall short of expectations. “He's playing just for the brand, for his name, for the fandom - and still putting in the effort. At 43, he's doing wicketkeeping, captaining, carrying the entire team on his shoulders. But what are the other ten players doing?” Raina asked. Raina also criticised the recent auction strategies, stating that the players selected in the auction didn’t seem to fit the team's needs. He made it clear that the core group, not Dhoni, handles the auction decisions, and that the selections made were not up to par. “The core group handles the auction - you can imagine, Dhoni can’t have this type of auction. He would maybe name four or five players he wants, and out of them, a few would be retained. Even if an uncapped player is working hard, look at MS Dhoni, being a 43-year-old captain, still giving everything,” he said. Further expressing his concerns, Raina pointed out the lack of responsibility from some of CSK's high-paid players. He questioned their ability to step up in crucial moments and be the match-winners CSK desperately needs. “Those who are paid Rs 18 crores, Rs 17 crores, Rs 12 crores - they're not responding to the captain. Especially when you've never lost to certain teams before - that needs to be rectified. You have to identify - is this player a match-winner?” Raina added. Chennai Super Kings are currently in the bottom of the points table, with two wins from nine matches. The five-time champions have lost seven matches so far and needs a mathematical miracle to make it to the IPL 2025 playoffs.
