Former Australian cricketer Michael Hussey recently shared an amusing yet tense moment from the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL). As Chennai Super Kings' batting coach, he recalled how MS Dhoni, the legendary Indian captain, was furious with him after getting out to Rashid Khan. In an interview, Hussey said that just a day before the big playoff match, the team analyst sent him split-screen visuals of Rashid Khan’s bowling grip. The clip showed how Rashid’s wrong’un could be identified—when his fingers were close together. Hussey, however, hesitated to share it with the team so late. He feared that overloading players with information just before a crucial match might do more harm than good. But things took a dramatic turn on match day. CSK lost quick wickets, and Dhoni walked in to stabilize the innings. Rashid Khan bowled his first delivery, a wrong’un. Dhoni went for a cover drive, missed the ball, and got bowled. Furious, he stormed back to the dressing room, eyes locked on Hussey, and snapped at him. Hussey, taken aback, sat in stunned silence for the rest of the game, fearing his coaching stint might have just ended there. Hussey said, “We were like four down for nothing the next day and Dhoni’s in with Faf at the other. Rashid Khan comes in first ball and bowls the wrong’un. Dhoni goes for the cover drive, hitting against the spin, bowled. You got to understand that this guy is a mega star, like bigger than god. He comes in and looks me straight in the eye and he goes, ‘I’ll bat my own f***ing way, thanks’ and sits down next to me. Oh, Coaching career, done! I sat for the rest of the game like a stunned mullet." With Faf du Plessis playing a heroic knock, they won the match by two wickets and advanced to the final. They then defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad again to clinch their third IPL title. Fast forward to 2025, Dhoni is preparing for yet another IPL season. Recently, he was spotted hitting massive sixes during CSK’s pre-season camp, showing no signs of slowing down. His arrival at Chennai airport also sparked speculation, as he wore a T-shirt with the words ‘One Last Time,’ hinting at a possible farewell season. As always, Dhoni’s presence remains a source of excitement for fans, and with Hussey still on CSK’s coaching staff, their bond—built on moments like 2018—continues to thrive.
