Former Australian captain Michael Clarke was full of praise for MS Dhoni after Chennai Super Kings registered a five-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants on Monday. Speaking on Star Sports, Clarke said Dhoni’s leadership was the defining factor in CSK’s performance, highlighting the veteran’s ability to read conditions and execute plans remarkably. “It is always loud when MS Dhoni's in town. Look, his keeping does not surprise me. I have said it before, in my opinion, he is still the best wicketkeeper in the world. It is phenomenal how consistent he has been over a long period of time. I thought his captaincy was spot on tonight as well, the way he used both spinners through the middle, got through overs quick, built some pressure,” Clarke said. He also pointed out how Dhoni's experience came in handy for the five-time champions in the first innings. “The best thing that happened tonight was MS Dhoni's captaincy. It was phenomenal. He read the situation, he adjusted to the conditions, he bowled his spinners in tandem, exactly like MS Dhoni has done his entire career. He got them on, they rushed through the overs, they changed the pace of the game, they used the surface, they picked up wickets. I just think his experience out there on the field was defining tonight as captain," he said. Clarke also touched upon Dhoni’s tactical nous during a crucial ball change and how he rotated his bowlers with precision. “Look, I think just pace off the ball on that pitch was just so important. I think the other thing as well, that ball change. When the ball got changed and he went to fast bowling from both ends. I thought maybe that was a chance to go back to his strike weapon and taken a couple of wickets in Bishnoi. Easier to grip, maybe a little bit more spin as well. You can look at a number of things,” Clarke observed. He said he would have liked an extra 10 or 15 runs, so if they get those runs, maybe it wouldn't have mattered who he bowled," he said. He also pointed out how CSK were better in the fielding department compared to the Lucknow Super Giants. "They missed a couple of opportunities in the field, a couple of drop catches as well. Probably the area where CSK was certainly better than LSG tonight with the fielding. That's the way it goes. You win some, you lose some, you go with your gut and you back it every single time,” Clarke concluded. Despite the loss, LSG still find themselves in the fourth spot in the points table with four wins and three losses. Meanwhile, CSK is at the bottom of the table with two wins and five losses.
