Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has thrown his weight behind MS Dhoni’s return as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season. Dhoni has been handed the captaincy once again after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out for the season due to a hairline fracture in his elbow. Speaking at an event after his AI Digital Avatar was launched by Ikonz, Ganguly praised Dhoni’s leadership qualities and his ability to hit sixes even at 43. “MS Dhoni can still hit sixes, we saw that in the other game. Obviously, he's 43 years old, you don't expect to see the MS Dhoni that I saw in 2005, that's quite natural. But I think he's still got the power to clear and hit. And I saw him play the other day in Punjab, and he did hit a few sixes," Ganguly said, as quoted by PTI. Dhoni as CSK captain is a different beast: Ganguly Ganguly also feels that Dhoni's experience would come in handy for the rest of the season. "I think with all his experience, all that he's achieved, he understands the game as good as anybody and will do what is right for CSK,” he said. With Gaikwad unable to continue this season, Ganguly pointed out how Dhoni is a "different beast" as the CSK captain. “If he has to play for CSK, he must be the captain of CSK. Because MS Dhoni, the captain, is a different beast,” he added. Dhoni had stepped down from captaincy ahead of the 2024 season, and Ruturaj Gaikwad was made the captain of the franchise. However, the Maharashtra batter could not take CSK through the play-offs in the last season, where they were knocked out by RCB in the last league game, and the team had lost four out of their five matches in a row.
