Morne Morkel is appointed as the official bowling coach of the Indian cricket team. The contract is proposed to start from 1 September. This has been confirmed to Cricbuzz by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, following reports earlier that linked Morkel to the role ahead of the Sri Lanka series. The former South African pacer had earlier worked with current India head coach Gautam Gambhir at the Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League when Gambhir was the team mentor, with Morkel as the bowling coach of the team. Not to forget, Morkel and Gambhir had also played together for three seasons at the Kolkata Knight Riders. Morkel's first stint with the Indian team will be for the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, starting September 19. In his entire international career between 2006 and 2018, Morkel played 247 matches for South Africa and picked up a total of 544 wickets. He is widely remembered for the great combinations with other pace bowlers like Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander – and together, they dented many oppositions in numerous key wins for the Proteas.
